The Texas Coast is a special place; it’s filled with crazy wildlife, both large and small. During this years’ pilgrimage, I did a lot of fishing from the bow of a skiff and a fair share of walk / wading, exploring places I haven’t been before around the Galveston Bay complex.
You can find redfish all up and down the coast but there’s nothing quite like a Texas Redfish. In this article, I recap my trip down to the Texas Coast which spanned from early October to early November.
Hosted Trip
Our hosted trip could not have gone better!
We fished for four days with Addison Rhudy of GordaFly and Jake Haddock of Frigate Bird Fishing. These guys know the water and fish better than anybody in the Galveston Bay area and it showed as they put us on fish from the start.
Our accommodations were comfortable and convenient, just blocks away from the Historic “Strand” district of Galveston. The Galveston Fishing Company was located just downstairs from our loft, making it easy to grab a few flies or souvenirs for family back home.
The weather was almost perfect and boy, did we see a lot of fish, most of them up close and personal after they ate our fly. I got to witness good buddy and fellow guide, Tyler, catch his first red fish. This was a special moment for me as I’ve learned a lot from Tyler over the past few years, making this very memorable.
Logan joined us from South Carolina. However, he’s a native Texan and this was certainly more like a homecoming for him. He said he was a little green to fly fishing, as he’d only been doing it for a year or so. He could’ve fooled us. He came prepared with a great cast and was awarded with plenty of redfish, a couple of alligator gar, and even a sheepshead!
Outside of the hosted trip, I spent several days cruising the flats solo. This was a great opportunity to practice poling and scout new water. This is something I’ve dreamed about doing since I caught my first redfish a few years ago. After tuning up my mud boat this past spring, it was finally time to get her out in the salt.
My last week in Texas a buddy from Colorado came down to fish with me. The weather turned for the worse and we had to deal with overcast, cloudy weather for most of the week. However, we were able to get out in the boat one morning and we took advantage of short weather window.
As a 5th generation Texan, I love returning to the Texas Coast. I’m constantly reminded of crab fishing with my grandpa, mom & dad, and my brothers and sister. And while, I don’t live in the lone star state, it always feels like coming home. I look forward to many more trips to the Texas coast and sharing it with more people for years to come!
