The Gunnison
The Gunnison River is a Western Slope staple. The sections we fish are just below Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Below you’ll find more detail about the sections we can walk / wade.
Gunnison Gorge
Overnight trips (3 day, 2 nights) in the Gunnison Gorge are not for the faint of heart. There is no easy way down to the river and we’ll be carrying down all our gear. The easiest trail down is the Ute Trail which will lead us into the Ute Park section of the Gunnison Gorge. This area provides the most water access and some pretty good fishing.
Price includes the $5 per person per day overnight use fee (collected by BLM), camping supplies, rods, reels, wading boots/ socks, and the guide will have flies. You’re more than welcome to bring your own gear, if you’d prefer. Check out our packing list for more details on what to bring.
Smith Fork
This section is a four mile stretch up-river from Pleasure Park. Our day will begin at Pleasure Park, and we’ll hike our way upriver. We can choose to fish upriver and leave the long hike back for the end of the day or we can choose to hike all the way up and fish our way back. There are some ups and downs to this hike but there’s not a lot of elevation to be gained. However, this section offers very little shade so expect to be out in the sun for the majority of the day. Once in the river, this section is an easy walk / wade section offering lots of gentle riffles and cut banks to throw dry flies at rising fish.
Lower Gunnison
From Pleasure Park down is what we consider the Lower Gunnison. There is a lot of private water on this stretch but a few public stretches to access. We also have access to a couple of miles of private section near our lodge, home of Black Canyon Anglers. We usually have lunch in the lodge or under one of the patios on the property. This is a great place to get some fishing without all the hiking.
This adventure is made possible with our partner: Black Canyon Anglers
